One of the wine bloggers I follow is Joe Roberts, of 1WineDude. Together with Tara O’Leary, aka the Wine Passionista, he has launched a video series interviewing major influencers in the world of wine.
Recently they featured an interview with Gary Vaynerchuk, one of the true trail blazers in wine marketing. After shooting to social media fame promoting his family wine business via Wine Library TV in the late 2000s, Vaynerchuk leveraged his social media stardom to launch a branding company, Vayner Media.
It’s a really good interview, and Vaynerchuk’s continued passion for wine really comes through. Vaynerchuk mentions some of my favorite “Work” themes, like the importance of content marketing and authentic story telling.
Check out the video below. Since it’s over 30 minutes and I know my visitors are busy people, here are some of the highlights:
- He sees some improvement over the past 18 months is social media usage in the wine industry, but still estimates it’s only around 5 percent
- The cost of story telling has plummeted to the point where EVERYONE should be doing it (he used as example Joe and Tara using Google Hangout to make the video)
- In a honest reply to a Joe question, he said he does feel badly about abandoning his wine followers
- But he spent almost 20 years living that life, from age 16 to 35, and he’ll have another “rodeo” in wine before the ride ends
- Prediction — Google Glasses will be revolutionary, big time disruptive technology
- Biggest mistake made repeatedly in the wine business — ceding control of the customer experience
- Social media tip — when a new social media platform emerges — Vine, Instagram — go big right away so you can gain “land grab”
