Over two years ago I wrote a review about The Majestic, on King Street in the heart of Old Town. It was a strong performer that night, and was again recently when Gabriele and I returned.
Last time at the Majestic I wrote about us enjoying a 2006 Allan Scott Pinot Noir with dinner. The Majestic introduced us to this nice New Zealand wine, and we’ve enjoyed it many times since. Because we already knew the Allan Scott, we wanted to try something new. The service is always good at The Majestic and after bringing over a taste of the Pinot they pour by the glass that didn’t make the mark, our server suggested the 2008 Rex Hill Pinot Noir from Oregon.
The wine has a fresh, vibrant aroma and is light without being weak. It’s very smooth tasting, with raspberry and cherry fruit forward but not over the top. The wine has a tart, clean finish with a little hint of pepper/spice on the very end of the finish. It was a tasty example of Oregon Pinot at a decent price point and probably retails for around $25.
Just like last time the food was super — I’d highly recommend the mussels and the lamb carpaccio appetizers and the scallops entree. The scallops came sitting on a bed of pureed red pepper/chiles/almond paste puree, with onions, black olives and potatoes. It was an off the beaten path preparation that was excellent.
The Majestic’s decor creates a convivial atmosphere, with a long bar in the front of the house and bustling tables in the back. It pays homage to its past as a restaurant in that location since 1949 with a lot of framed pictures in the bar, and an old-fashioned, working enclosed phone booth downstairs by the restrooms.
It’s nice when you can return to a restaurant and have the experience be just as good as you remember. Thanks for the consistency, Majestic!
