There is an ongoing discussion in PR circles regarding what role the press release plays, if any, in effective public relations. Many social media evangelists claim the press release is dead and needs to be totally replaced.
I take a contrarian view. A well written press release accomplishes many things, and in some ways is more influential than ever. Ann Handley of MarketingProfs ran my article on this topic last March (hey, I didn’t have a blog then)
