MotorTrend Head to Head - Affordable Sports Car

This weekend I found an entertaining video from MotorTrend, courtesy of the BMW Blog. Mike Febbo of MotorTrend and Greg Emerson of European Car Magazine squared off on their pick of the best affordable sports car today.

Mike is a huge fan of the Scion FR-S, while Greg feels that the Volkswagen GTI is the proper choice. Interestingly, the benchmark  car they use as a comparison is the  BMW E30 M3, a 24 year old car. And they both agree it’s still the better driving car after all these years.

The back and forth between the two is interesting, and highlights the subjectivity of tests like this one. Does fastest always mean best? What about factors like driving feel, everyday usefulness and street vs. track fun factor?

Too bad BMW doesn’t make cars like this anymore, as Greg points out late in the video. Maybe the rumored, upcoming 2 Series will bring cars like this back to the American market.
